Practice · Agri-Food Systems

Food systems are economic, social, political, and ecological. We work across the connections between them.

We help governments, development partners, and businesses understand and improve how agrifood systems function — from production and markets to food businesses, diets, nutrition, and policy.

Our work combines economic and market analysis with systems thinking, private sector engagement, and applied research to identify where change is possible, who needs to act, and what interventions are likely to be viable in practice.

What we do

Five service lines spanning markets, businesses, resilience, and nutrition.

01

Value chain and market systems analysis

We analyse how agricultural and food markets function — the actors, incentives, relationships, costs, margins, constraints, and institutional conditions shaping performance. Our work includes value chain analysis, market systems diagnostics, actor and margin mapping, enterprise economics, demand assessment, market linkage analysis, and identification of commercially viable opportunities for producers and businesses.

02

Climate-resilient agriculture and inclusive value chain design

We design and assess interventions that help producers, agribusinesses, and value chains respond to climate, market, and production risks. Our work spans climate-resilient production, access to finance and services, market linkages, technology adoption, and inclusive business models, with experience across livestock, dairy, horticulture, and other agricultural value chains.

03

Agribusiness, private sector and inclusive business advisory

We work with development partners and businesses to understand how commercial incentives can support wider development outcomes. This includes private sector mapping and engagement, business model analysis, partnership design, inclusive sourcing, enterprise development, investment and market assessments, and analysis of gender and inclusion within agribusiness operations and supply chains.

04

Nutrition, food fortification and healthier food systems

We support nutrition-sensitive and nutrition-specific programmes through research, economic analysis, programme design, and evaluation. Our work includes the economics and operational analysis of large-scale food fortification, workforce nutrition, maternal and child nutrition, school feeding, food environments, and analysis of how food systems influence access to affordable and nutritious diets.

05

Food security, policy and programme design

We support clients to understand food security risks and translate evidence into programmes, policies, and investment priorities. Our work includes food security assessments, response analysis, programme and policy design, shock-responsive approaches, agricultural and food policy analysis, and evaluation of interventions intended to improve resilience, livelihoods, food security, and nutrition.
